According to President Obama's speech a terrible event occurred, yet America has learned from it. Obama says that the massacre was a terrible tragedy that profoundly affected the community of Tucson. Within the tragic story, the president emphasizes the idea of hope for the future. President Obama comments on the bravery of the common folks who risked their lives to save others. He concludes his speech with an uplifting image of Christina, who was born in the tragic 9/11 attack, jumping in heaven's rain puddles. Obama asks for God's blessings upon our nation in hope for a better America that Christina imagined.
Mark Shields claims that Obama's Tucson memorial speech was not a shot for his reelection campaign which is beginning soon. Mark explains how Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords' life was saved by a Mexican-American in Arizona despite any differences. Late in the session, Shields argues that gun control laws should be regulated more, but the possibility of change is highly unlikely to occur. David Brook's believes that this was Obama's best speech because it connected with the people on an emotional level unlike his previous speeches. He also compares the funeral to a celebration rather than a time of mourning because they belief in the renewal of the victims. One last detail that Brooks points out was the risky maneuver that President Obama said during the speech which mentioned that Christina, a Tucson massacre victim, was jumping in rain puddles in heaven.
